White House Issues Executive Order on Proposed Accreditation Reform

Last night, the White House issued an executive order cracking down on accrediting agencies and proposing reform for accreditation with aim to "bring long-overdue change," according to a statement from Education Secretary Linda McMahon. The order targets two accrediting agencies for investigation, suggesting that others could potentially lose federal recognition.

The executive order states, "A group of higher education accreditors are the gatekeepers that decide which colleges and universities American students can spend the more than $100 billion in Federal student loans and Pell Grants dispersed each year. The accreditors’ job is to determine which institutions provide a quality education — and therefore merit accreditation. Unfortunately, accreditors have not only failed in this responsibility to students, families, and American taxpayers, but they have also abused their enormous authority."
